Schull’s Weather Forecast

Schull Christmas Fair

Last Saturday morning the sun shone brightly and brought a thaw to the skating rink on all routes into Schull. Despite cancellations abound all week, organisers Noreen Levis & Linda Morgan held their nerve and the CHRISTMAS FAIR went  ahead.

The Hall looked magical after its Christmas makeover and I wondered was I in the right place, 22 StallsChristmas Fair from Ballydehob, Schull & Goleen laden with gifts from woolly hats to handmade jewellery, Christmas cards, local pottery, home baking, wall hangings, pictures, calendars, hampers but to name a few. Entrepreneurs in kitchens all over the peninsula.

With a start time at 12 midday, there was a hall full of punters shortly after and a great buzz of trading ensued.

Teas, coffees, hot chocolate & scrumptious home baking were on the go in the kitchen deftly managed by Mary O’Driscoll our esteemed Secretary.

The Parish Choir arrived around 2pm & sang a beautiful set of Christmas Carols.     . . . Pictures

The man himself, “Santa Claus” arrived shortly before 3pm and boy did he command his presence, children, big and small looked in awe and excitement as they queued to meet Santa in his splendid grotto surrounded by illuminated Deer and polo bears.

Santa listened intently as each boy and girl told him what they wanted for Christmas. Nobody went away empty handed as the elves distributed bubbles, paints, pencils & books.

The big fundraising draw in aid of Schull & District Community Council was held later in the evening with prize winners as follows;

1st Prize 500 euro- Ellen Roycroft, Gubbeen, Schull

2nd Prize 250 euro- Linda Morgan Coosheen Schull

3rd Prize 100 euro- Jane Hurley, Coorydorrigan, Schull.

The overall success of the CHRISTMAS FAIR was due to the tremendous community spirit of the Schull and Mizen area.

On that note Schull & District Community Council wish to thank all those who participated, attended, supported and helped in any way with this outstanding local success story.

Already we are talking about 2011 – DECEMBER 3RD – Mark it in.

Pub Quiz at the Black Sheep

A successful fundraising table-quiz for the new Schull Community and District Council was held at the Black Sheep Inn on Fri. 19th. Nov.

At the conclusion of the final sequence of questions a tie-break was declared between Schull Community Inshore Rescue Service [SCIRS] and Newman’s West.  SCIRS emerged worthy winners, at the end of the ensuing play-off, by a point .

A BIG THANK-YOU to Quizmaster, Jim Carrig, and raffle sponsors… Camiers Filling Station Ballydehob; Courtyard Crafts; Seaview B&B; Mary O’Driscoll; Black Sheep Inn; Kevin & Catherine Kelleher; Schull Short Film Festival Committee; Dermot Sheehan, Goleen; West Cork Boilers; Margaret McCarthy; and Paul Field.
